There’s the job people see—and then theres the job as it really is. This Tee tells the story of a firefighter’s shift from beginning to end: kiss the family goodbye, check out the rig, settle into the daily routine, try to eat around five, and maybe get some sleep if you can. At the center of the design is the pump shift control—the knob that shifts the engine into pump gear and puts the apparatus to work flowing water to the hose lines. It represents that moment when the routine stops and the job becomes very real. From there, the design says it plainly: respond to whatever is thrown at you. Be willing to risk everything for a complete stranger. Above all, protect your brothers and sisters. Then, when the shift is finally over, get home to your family, wait two days—and do it all again.
